Three minutes is the length many online employment typing tests use. Long enough to show your real pace, short enough to take often. This test gives you a net WPM and accuracy you can reasonably compare with what employers measure.

Why three minutes

A one-minute test flatters your speed; a ten-minute test mostly measures stamina. Three minutes sits between the two, which is why it's such a common format for job screening tests and speed qualifications.

How you're scored

You'll get net WPM (words of five characters, minus uncorrected errors) and accuracy. There's no pass mark here; to test yourself against a target, try the 40, 45 or 50 WPM tests, which use the same three-minute length.

Making the most of it

Treat it like the real thing: sit properly, warm up first, and don't stop to fix a mistake you've already passed. Take it a few times and use your typical score, not your best one, as your real speed.

3 Minute Typing Test: FAQ

How long are employment typing tests?

Commonly between one and five minutes, with three minutes being a frequent choice.

What is a good 3-minute typing score?

40 WPM or more with 92%+ accuracy meets many job requirements; 50+ WPM is strong.

Is there a pass mark?

No, this test just measures your speed. The 35, 40, 45, 50 and 60 WPM tests have pass marks.

Why is my 3-minute score lower than my 1-minute score?

Speed naturally dips a little over a longer test. The three-minute number is closer to your real, sustained speed.
