What a one-minute test tells you

A one-minute test shows your speed when you're fresh and focused. It's great for a quick benchmark, but it usually reads a little higher than your sustained speed, because there's no time for fatigue or concentration to slip.

For a number you can quote on a job application, use the three or five minute test as well.

How it's scored

You type for 60 seconds and get your net WPM, which counts a word as five characters and subtracts uncorrected errors, along with your accuracy. There's no pass mark: it simply measures where you are.

Using it to improve

Take a one-minute test at the start of each practice session and note the result. Tracking the same short test over weeks is one of the clearest ways to see whether your practice is working.

1 Minute Typing Test: FAQ

Is a one-minute typing test accurate?

It's a good quick measure, but tends to be slightly higher than your sustained speed. Longer tests give a more realistic number.

What is a good one-minute typing speed?

Around 40 WPM is a good result for most people; 60+ WPM is fast.

How is WPM calculated?

Characters typed divided by five give the number of words; uncorrected errors are subtracted to give net WPM per minute.

Which test should I use for a job application?

Use the three or five minute test, since most employment tests run for that long.
