The Short Answer

The average typing speed for adults is 40 WPM. But "good" depends entirely on what you do for a living. A customer support agent needs more speed than a project manager; a court reporter needs more than both combined.

How Typing Speed Is Measured

WPM (Words Per Minute) is the global standard. One "word" equals 5 characters including spaces. So if you type 250 characters in one minute, your WPM is 50.

There are two types:

  • Gross WPM โ€” total words typed, including mistakes
  • Net WPM โ€” gross WPM minus errors. This is your real speed.

Net WPM = Gross WPM โˆ’ (Errors ร— Penalty)

Always measure net WPM. Gross WPM is misleading โ€” a 70 WPM typist with 15% errors is effectively slower than a 55 WPM typist with 2% errors.

Why Accuracy Matters More Than Raw Speed

Let's compare two typists writing a 500-word report:

Typist A: 80 WPM, 90% accuracy

  • Types 500 words in 6.25 minutes
  • But 50 words have errors โ†’ 3+ minutes fixing them
  • Real time: ~10 minutes

Typist B: 60 WPM, 99% accuracy

  • Types 500 words in 8.3 minutes
  • Only 5 words need fixing โ†’ 30 seconds
  • Real time: ~9 minutes

Typist B wins despite being "slower." In every real-world scenario, accuracy beats raw speed.

How to Test Your Speed Accurately

1. Use a standardized typing test โ€” not a custom text you've seen before

2. Test for at least 1 minute โ€” 15-second tests inflate your score

3. Take 3 tests and average the results

4. Measure net WPM, not gross

5. Use Durga Typing's free test mode โ€” it calculates net WPM with proper error counting

How to Improve from Your Current Level

  • Under 30 WPM: Focus on touch typing fundamentals โ€” learn proper finger placement with structured lessons
  • 30โ€“50 WPM: You have the basics. Practice accuracy-first drills daily
  • 50โ€“70 WPM: Work on problem keys and practice with real content
  • 70+ WPM: Maintain with daily practice, push with speed drills and difficult passages

WPM vs CPM vs KDPH

Different contexts use different units:

UnitFull NameConversionUsed Where
WPMWords Per MinuteBase unit (1 word = 5 chars)Worldwide
CPMCharacters Per MinuteCPM = WPM ร— 5European tests
KDPHKey Depressions Per HourKDPH = CPM ร— 60Indian govt exams

When to Test

  • Test once a week to track progress
  • Always test at the same time of day โ€” typing speed varies by energy level
  • Don't test right after practice โ€” test cold for realistic results
