Remington GAIL Keyboard Layout Explained
Learn the Remington GAIL Hindi keyboard: half letters, the ि matra, reph and how it differs from Inscript. Practise online with instant Unicode output.
What is Remington GAIL?
Remington GAIL is a Unicode Hindi keyboard that keeps the key positions of the traditional Remington Hindi typewriter — the same positions Kruti Dev uses. You type the way a typewriter typist does, and the output is proper Unicode that any computer can read.
Rules that trip up new typists
- Half letter + ा = full letter: many letters (ख, श, ण, थ, भ, ध, घ, क्ष) are typed as the half form followed by
k - ि is typed first: press
fbefore the consonant — कि =fd - Reph after the letter: र् above a letter is typed after it — धर्म =
/keZ - Two-key vowels: को =
dks, और =vkSj
Remington GAIL vs Inscript
Inscript types in logical Unicode order and puts vowels on the left hand. Remington GAIL types in visual (typewriter) order. Both are accepted in CPCT Hindi; Remington GAIL is the better pick if you already know Kruti Dev.
