What is SSC CHSL Typing Test (DEST)?
The Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) is the final hurdle in SSC CHSL Tier-2. You are given a printed passage and must type it on a computer within 15 minutes. The official benchmark is 8,000 key depressions per hour — which works out to roughly 2,000 keystrokes in 15 minutes.
This isn't just a typing speed test. The examiners also count errors, and the error formula can hurt your score significantly if you haven't practiced under exam conditions.
Key Rules You Must Know
1. Speed Requirement
- 8,000 Key Depressions per Hour (KDPH)
- In 15 minutes, you need to type approximately 2,000 correct keystrokes
- Each wrong word costs you, so net speed matters more than gross speed
2. Error Calculation
SSC uses a strict error-counting formula. Each incorrectly typed word is counted as one error. Your final score is calculated as:
Net KDPH = (Total keystrokes typed − Error penalty) ÷ time in hours
A single careless mistake can cost you 5–10 keystrokes in the formula. Practice with error awareness, not just speed.
3. Backspace Policy
In the actual exam software, backspace may or may not be allowed depending on the exam centre setup. Many candidates fail because they trained with backspace enabled and then freeze in the hall without it.
Always practice with backspace disabled so you build the muscle memory to type correctly the first time.
4. No Text Highlighting
Unlike regular typing apps, the SSC exam software does NOT highlight the current word or letter. You read from the printed passage beside you and type — there is zero on-screen visual aid.
30-Day Strategy to Clear DEST
Week 1 — Build the Foundation (Days 1–7)
- Focus on accuracy first, not speed
- Practice 30-minute sessions daily on English passages
- Target: 95%+ accuracy at any speed
- Use Durga Typing's Practice Mode with backspace disabled
Week 2 — Increase Speed Gradually (Days 8–14)
- Once accuracy is above 95%, push your WPM
- Aim for 35 WPM (English) by end of week
- Practice with no text highlight and manual scroll to simulate exam feel
Week 3 — Full Mock Tests (Days 15–21)
- Take 15-minute timed mock tests every day
- Use Durga Typing's SSC CHSL exam mode — it mirrors the exact exam interface
- Review your weak keys after each session using the DNA panel
Week 4 — Endurance and Confidence (Days 22–30)
- Two 15-minute mock tests per day
- Focus on maintaining accuracy under pressure
- Track your net KDPH — target 8,500+ KDPH for a comfortable buffer
Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Why It Hurts |
|---|---|
| Practicing with backspace enabled | Creates wrong muscle memory |
| Ignoring error count | Net KDPH drops sharply with errors |
| Only practicing at a comfortable speed | Exam pressure changes everything |
| Not reading ahead in the passage | Causes hesitation and speed drops |
How Durga Typing Helps
Durga Typing is built specifically for SSC exam conditions:
- Backspace restriction mode — exactly like the exam hall
- No word highlighting — trains your eyes to read and type simultaneously
- Official error formula — your score reflects what SSC will actually give you
- 15-minute exam simulation — same duration as the real DEST
- Weak key analysis — identifies which fingers slow you down
