The official formula
According to MAP_IT's *Typing Test Assessment in CPCT*, words are split at every space and compared with the passage:
- Gross Words = correct + incorrect words you typed
- Net Words = correct words you typed
- NWPM = Net Words ÷ time taken in minutes
- Accuracy = NWPM × 100 ÷ GWPM
Only NWPM appears on the score card. There is no penalty per mistake and no separate accuracy cut-off.
The scaled score table (CPCT Rulebook §3.9)
| English NWPM | Hindi NWPM | Scaled score |
|---|---|---|
| 30 – 40 | 20 – 25 | 50% (qualified) |
| 41 – 50 | 26 – 30 | 60% |
| 51 – 60 | 31 – 35 | 70% |
| 61 – 70 | 36 – 40 | 80% |
| 71 – 80 | 41 – 50 | 90% |
| 81+ | 51+ | 100% |
Worked examples
English
You type 540 words in 15 minutes and 495 of them are correct.
- NWPM = 495 ÷ 15 = 33 → 50% scaled score, qualified
- Accuracy = 33 × 100 ÷ 36 = 92%
Hindi
You type 300 words in 15 minutes and 270 are correct.
- NWPM = 270 ÷ 15 = 18 → below 20, not qualified
- Fix 30 more words (300 correct) and NWPM becomes 20 — qualified.
What a skipped word does
A word you skip was never typed, so it isn't an "incorrect word" — it simply doesn't add to your correct words. A wrong word, a case mistake or a punctuation mistake makes that word incorrect.
How to raise your NWPM
- Correct as you go — Backspace is allowed in CPCT, and a corrected word counts as correct.
- Type every word exactly — capitals and punctuation must match.
- Practise full 15-minute tests so your speed holds to the end.
